You Asked: It is obvious that there are quite a few things that you love about Skidmore, but what is something 2 things that you wish you could change?

This is a great question and I thank you for asking. You are correct, there are many and many things I love but if I had to complain about something it would be that I can’t have another 4 years here. No but seriously; one thing I guess I would change is a small detail about dormitories. I really enjoyed living in the dorms. It was great living so close to so many people. It would be nice if more upper class men lived in dorms. All students are allowed to live in the dorms all four years if they would like, housing is guaranteed. But with the town houses we have on campus all students are eager to move into those that I feel even students who would like to stay in the dorms are almost pressure to move into a house because it is the “thing” to do.
That’s about it and maybe I was serious about the not getting four additional years thing :)

A Post Thanksgiving Post

Thanksgiving, a day dedicated entirely to giving thanks to all things we appreciate in this world, of course not assuming we don’t give thanks every day of the year; For eating unbelievable amounts of food, observing semi awkward encounters between family members who have not spoken since, well last Thanksgiving; For the exciting feeling you get at the sound of tin foil wrapping the left overs you are sure to eat for the next three days, MmMmMm turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches; and lets not forget, for the countdown to the dangerous but oh so worth it Black Friday sales.

Okay, so maybe I am a little late on talking about the giving thanks, food, business but whether or not I hit the nail on describing your family’s thanksgiving I do hope it was a splendid holiday. I love left overs so if you’d like to overnight a dish, send it to me at my Skidmore address, please and thank you!

And in the spirit of giving thanks I will list the things about Skidmore I am thankful for not in any particular order.

1. I love who I have become in the last few years and I am thankful for the friends who have helped me get here

2. Professors who let me sit in their office for hours until I ‘get it’

3. Courses that hit me upside the head and open my eyes to things I have never taken notice of before

4. Great om nom noms at the Dining Hall. What would life be like without Chicken Finger Friday, hmmm maybe a few pounds lighter

5. The opportunity to take whatever class I want

6. The pretty landscape

7. Window seats in every dormitory of which my best friend insisted on sleeping in when she visited

8. Not having to share  a bathroom with an entire floor when I lived in the dorms

9. Northwoods (junior/ senior houses located on campus). I love my beautiful apartment

10. The Spa (fast food eatery located in the student center), being open always right when I need it, for my 1am munchies

11. Financial Aid. Need I say more?

12. Summer Housing. Who doesn’t want to stick around for the summer and lose a few bucks at the race track

13. Alumni Network. Someone’s going to hire me

14. Student Employment. There was always the option of not being broke

15. The sports center. I’m still trying to work off that freshman fifteen. Its been three years

16. For Australia

17. For covered walkways and buildings that are connected

18. For never being bored because there is so much to do

19. Being located in the beautiful Saratoga Springs

20. For not being a cookie cutter campus

I can go on for a long time but talking about left overs earlier has me wanting some right now. I’m thinking I should head towards the fridge now. But I will end by saying, most of all, I am thankful for Skidmore giving me an experience of which I will forever look back on and think, college was amazing…. can I do it again ?! ….. no but really, how do I do it all again?!!

You Asked: Is there pressure to be talented? like in the arts.

Absolutely not !! I can not sing, play an instrument, draw, paint, and I only think I can dance. I never felt left out. There is a great creative scene here. I really like that about Skidmore. I can enjoy the creativity of students without feeling like I have to be talented in the arts.

You Asked: Do you guys have off- campus dorms? Do most people live on- campus?

Skidmore College does not have any off campus dormitories as of 2006 (I may be off by a bit on that year). I think that is the year of which Skidmore sold Moore Hall, a dorm that was apart of the old campus. The campus use to be located about a 20 minute walk from the current campus, in the center of town.
90-95 % of Skidmore Students live on campus. Students are guaranteed housing for all four years and can not live off campus until junior year. Only under certain circumstances can a student live off campus as an underclassman.
I mean why wouldn’t the majority of the student body want to live on campus?! The campus is beautiful and the rooms are large and the houses are sick !

Why did you choose Skidmore?

I thought it would be a cool idea to start a few video series. The first one being on the question “Why did you choose Skidmore?”

So every so often I will collect video responses from students on campus, make a video, and upload it. Here is the first of this series. Some people I totally threw off guard so excuse their awkwardness.

Enjoy :)

You Asked: How are the ladies at Skidmore?

There really is no real way to answer this question. There is no one way to describe the females that attend Skidmore.
What I can say is that the campus as a whole I think is passionate, diverse in interests, and open minded. Also Skidmore College is 60% female.

You Asked: Is there a strong competitive atmosphere at Skidmore? I went to a H.S where everyone wanted to know how everyone else did on an exam or assignment. It was uncomfortable.

Skidmore College is an academically rigorous campus. Getting accepted is a challenge as well as staying afloat when a student here. However, I do not consider Skidmore a competitive school. In other words there isn’t a cut throat atmosphere, students are not choking each other in hopes of killing the competition. It is much more common to see students assisting each other inside and outside of the classroom. This sense of community makes for a much more comfortable environment.

Wait, so this doesn’t last forever?

As I have mentioned it is Celebration Weekend. I loved that I had the opportunity to see some of my friends who just graduated. The class of 2011 is very dear to me. So many friends of mine graduated last semester. So much that in a way I thought I was a senior. I was talking to Odemaris Alicea’ 11 last night. I told her how it was so strange coming back to campus this semester without a bunch of my good friends here. I explained how it was just such a reality check. I think in so many ways I thought this would last forever. That I would be in this amazing place with all these amazing friends so close by, forever; the fun, laughs, learning would go on forever. And then 2011 rolled by before I even knew it and so many of my friends had to go graduate and go do stuff: change the world, make money, become apart of new communities, and see the real world. No longer will I walk 3 minutes to see them, instead I will drive hundreds of miles, and for some the closest I can be is a skype session or a phone call where virtual hugs replace loving arms. I no longer walk to class and see these faces in passing as I run late for class, yelling “call me later, lets get together”. And I am not in any way saying I do not still have great friends here. I do. What I am trying to say is that because I had so many friends who just graduated, and that I no longer see I realized more than ever that my Skidmore experience will not last forever. That I too will soon go out to save and see the world, hopefully make some money too!

WOW. That’s deep. I am sure this is not the last of my epiphanies. It is all apart of being a senior.

But since I am discussing friends of the class of 2011 I will talk about Erin Donnellan, who I just finished skyping !! – A great start to my morning. Erin was one of my closest friends at Skidmore. I wish more than ever that she could have visited this weekend but that is impossible. Erin is in the Peace Corps in Senegal, Africa. Cool, huh? I know !  Cool, yes, but so far ! :(  As much as I miss her I am so happy for her and so glad to hear that she is enjoying her work. I love seeing pictures of Erin on FB, her gorgeous face tanned form hours in the sun giving a huge smile from good times. I am sure Senegal is great but I can not wait till we can have her back state side.

Want to know more about what Erin is doing? Check out her blog.   http://africantreehugger.blogspot.com/

Below are some pictures Erin posted.
