how's your English department?

English is one of the top five majors here at Skidmore (as in one of the most popular). Students in the English program graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree and the major requires a minimum of 32 credit hours, with a total of at least 10 courses taken at the 200 or 300 level.

If you'd like to get student's perspective, I recommend checking out Molly's blog: http://bit.ly/o8k2ZU. She's a senior and an English major and French minor. She can give you more information about what it's like going through the English program at Skidmore. She's also on Formspring, if you want to ask her directly: http://www.formspring.me/mollyatskidmore.

For more information about the English department, you can visit their Web site here: http://bit.ly/qrzH7u and find them on Facebook here: http://on.fb.me/qfIeTs.

Hope that helps!

Saratoga Springs: A Great College Town!

If you haven’t heard the Saratoga Springs spiel before: here it is. Skidmore College is extremely lucky to be located in vibrant Saratoga Springs, NY. A 10-minute walk from campus puts you in the heart of a downtown brimming with galleries, clubs, shops (funky and major retail), coffeehouses, bistros, and great restaurants. Legendary folk club Caffè Lena, where Don McLean wrote “American Pie” and Bob Dylan performed, is a student favorite. So is Esperantos, co-founded by a Skidmore pyschology prof (student favorite, Sheldon Solomon, to be exact.)

Good location? Boston, New York City, and Montreal are no more than a three-hour car ride from campus. And the Adirondacks, Berkshires, and the Green Mountains, in easy striking distance, provide opportunities for rock- and mountain-climbing, white-water rafting, hiking, kayaking, downhill skiing, and mountain biking.

There’s real history here, too: famed mineral waters, a Revolutionary War battlefield, and the nation’s oldest and most beautiful thoroughbred race track. Arts? Culture? The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is summer home to the New York City Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, and a performing venue for top rock and jazz musicians.

As if these weren’t enough reasons to pick Skidmore and Saratoga Springs as an incredible place to spend four years, there’s also this: The Saratoga Lip Dub. Check out fellow Skidmore students at around 3:17 and enjoy!

how many student organzation does it have?

Tons! Ok, but really, there are more than 80 clubs listed on the Student Government Association’s (SGA) site: http://ow.ly/6A1GC and it seems like new ones pop up all the time.

Skidmore student organizations and clubs range from a capella groups to the Alpine Ski Team to the Environmental Action Club to Yoga. On the first Friday of fall semester there is a Club Fair on the Green where students can check out the different organizations and get involved. You can read more about the Club Fair here: http://ow.ly/6A1JY. The variety of student clubs and organizations is one of the many reasons students decide to attend Skidmore!

Do you allow a science major and music comp minor?

We not only allow it, we encourage it!

Skidmore is a liberal arts school where we pride ourselves in our cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students with multiple majors and minors are practically standard here. Our motto is Creative Thought Matters–and that means that Skidmore people believe that every life, every career and every endeavor is more profound with creativity at its core. Our students definitely get creative with their majors and minors. Here are a few who have applied creative thought to their own academic journeys:

Calder Wilson '11, double major in Art and Management & Business: http://bit.ly/nSOGs9

Joshua Cipolla '09, Classics major, Music minor: http://bit.ly/jOymLh

Melissa Green '13, Environmental Studies major, Studio Art minor: http://bit.ly/mQe8Uj

Leo Cancelmo '12, Psychology major, Music minor: http://bit.ly/pUbwDw

We also have a self-determined track where students can integrate more than one discipline to create their own major. For more information go to http://cms.skidmore.edu/sdm/.

How is diversity at Skidmore in terms of religion, ethinicity and orientation?

Great question! At Skidmore we work hard to enhance the diversity of our student population while providing the resources necessary to support all of our students in meeting our educational objectives.

To achieve this goal, Skidmore has a fantastic Office of Student Diversity Program (OSDP) that promotes cross-cultural understanding and positive relationships in support of student success and an inclusive campus community. OSDP initiatives are grounded in an understanding of diversity that includes people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, socio-economic classes, religious and spiritual traditions, ages, and abilities. Furthermore, on-campus student clubs and organizations range from the Asian Cultural Awareness Club, the Hip Hop Alliance and the International Student Union, and many more (more than 85 student-organized clubs exist!). For more information on the OSDP, visit their Web page here: http://cms.skidmore.edu/campuslife/osdp/.

As a college, Skidmore is not affiliated with a religion but our Office of Religious and Spiritual Life provides opportunities for members of the Skidmore community (students, faculty and staff) to develop their religious and spiritual lives, which are an important part of the educational experience. We have a chapel on campus as well as two part-time Jewish professionals and are affiliated with Catholic churches in the Saratoga Springs area, among others. For more religious and spiritual life on campus, go to http://cms.skidmore.edu/campuslife/religious_life/index.cfm.

In terms of cold, hard facts: the student population is approximately 59 percent female and 41 percent male; 21 percent of students identify as students of color; four percent are international; and six percent are dual citizens.

Hope that helps!
