What can you tell me about art portfolio submissions?

Hi there, I can and I will!

Art portfolios are accepted but they are not required since we don’t admit by major. We send portfolios to the Art department for review and top rated portfolios can have an impact on our eventual decisions.

Here’s a link to the guidelines for art portfolio submissions: http://cms.skidmore.edu/admissions/apply/checklist.cfm.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

How many student normally apply early decision?

Hi there,

We received 401 Early Decision applications for fall 2011 and 403 for fall 2010. These numbers include both Round 1 and 2. There’s no count for this year yet since yesterday was the deadline.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

I submitted my application for early decision round 1 this past weekend! Do students normally here by December?

Excellent question! I bet it feels nice to get that Early Decision application out of the way, right? The deadline for Early Decision Round 1 applications is today (November 15), so you are already ahead of the game! Students will hear back from Skidmore in mid-December by "snail mail" so make sure to check your actual mailbox at home.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Best,
Daniella

Sports Talk

It’s fall; and for the sports fan in me that usually means one thing — football. I went to a large state school in the midwest where football was a way of life every Saturday from September to November. You can imagine the shock I went through when I came to Skidmore and realized — gasp — there is no football team.

Well, let’s rewind here. There is a rumor that Skidmore once had a football team and that they played only one game (against Hamilton College) and won, therefore sealing our fate as an undefeated football team forever. I have no idea if that rumor is true. I heard it from Bob Carlton at The Skidmore Shop and frankly, I think he was making it up. But, still, the rumor is out there.

What is not, in fact, a rumor is that Skidmore competes in the NCAA Division III bracket. We are a member of the Liberty League which includes the likes of Bard College, Clarkson University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. Lawrence University, Union College and Vassar College. Our mascot is the Thoroughbred, a horse often known for speed, agility and spirit, and fits right in with the town of Saratoga Springs, whose motto is “Health, History and Horses.”

So, we may not have a football team, but we have plenty of other sports to keep you occupied.

2011 Skidmore College Women's Riding Team

We’ll start with what is arguably our most popular sport on campus — Women’s Riding (as in horseback riding). Did you know that since 1990 Skidmore’s equestrian team is the nation’s most successful—the New York Yankees of college riding, if you will? Riding is a varsity sport at Skidmore—not necessarily the case at other schools. Here’s an inside look at the riding program at Skidmore.

Other women’s sports include Basketball, Crew, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Diving, Tennis and Volleyball. This year’s field hockey season has started off with a bang, with only one loss to Middlebury. The women’s Tennis, Lacrosse, and Soccer teams also have Facebook pages where you can keep up with their respective seasons.

2010 Men's Basketball Liberty League Champs

As far as men’s teams go, our Basketball team won the 2010 Liberty League. Being Liberty League champs secured the T’breds (short for Thoroughbreds) a spot in the NCAA tournament. Though we ultimately lost to Amherst in the first round, we finished the season with a record of 18-10. It’s almost basketball season now, and there’s no telling what’s in store this year!

Our men’s ice hockey team picked up their first win over University of New England this past weekend at the hockey home opener. Fun fact: the hockey home opener is also “Pack the Rink” night where the first 400 fans receive a free T-shirt. In addition to the free shirts, there are also tricycle races, raffles and free prizes throughout the night.

Other men’s sports include Baseball, Crew, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming and Diving, and Tennis. Check out the men’s Lacrosse team on Facebook as well as the Tennis team.

So there’s a run down of the sport scene at Skidmore. We also have club sports and intramural teams for those of you who want to play recreationally and not competitively. Questions? Check out the Athletics site, or ask us!

Early Decision at Skidmore

Well, it’s that time of year again, early decision is upon us. The deadline to submit your application for early decision at Skidmore is less than two weeks away — November 15. Wouldn’t it be great to get your college decisions out of the way before Thanksgiving? Have you submitted your application yet? Here’s a checklist for those last minute details.

If you haven’t decided on early decision yet, here are a few questions you should ask yourself:

Q: How do I know early decision is right for me?

A: Skidmore’s early decision plans are designed for those students who have examined their college choices carefully and have decided, by November 15 or January 15 of their senior year, that Skidmore is their first-choice college. We encourage you to discuss your plans with your parents and guidance counselor before making a final decision.

Q: How do I apply as an early decision candidate?

A: Students should file the Application for Freshman Admission with the application fee (or request for a fee waiver) by November 15 for Round I and by January 15 for Round II. Candidates should check the box on page one of the application indicating that they are applying for early decision and submit the signed Early Decision Agreement Form with the application.

Since the Admissions Committee renders decisions on early decision applications within a month of the deadline, it is very important that the required information from the counselor and teachers be submitted in a timely fashion.

Q: When will I receive a decision on my application?

A: Students who apply by the November 15 deadline for Round I will be notified of the decision on their application in mid-December. Those who apply by the January 15 Round II deadline will hear by February 15. While early decision candidates may initiate applications to other colleges, if they are accepted under one of the early decision plans they must immediately withdraw all other applications and enroll at Skidmore.

Q: How do I apply for financial aid as an early decision applicant?

A: Candidates who are applicants for financial aid should register online for the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Financial Aid Application as soon as possible. (CSS PROFILE registration guides are available in high school guidance offices.) A CSS PROFILE customized financial aid application for Skidmore will be made available from the College Scholarship Service and should be completed on-line as soon as the applicant knows they are applying early decision to Skidmore.

Q: If I am accepted early decision and am an applicant for financial aid, when will I hear about my financial aid package?

A: Accepted students whose financial aid applications are complete will receive notification about their financial ad with their decision letters. Accepted early decision candidates whose financial aid files are incomplete are notified as soon as they submit the missing financial aid information.

Q: What is the difference between the Round I and Round II early decision plans?

A: The only difference is the dates. Many students visit colleges early and know by November 15 that Skidmore is their first choice and are able to file a Round I early decision application. Other students wait until January 15 because their decision to apply early came after the Round I deadline or because they want the Admissions Committee to have the benefit of new test scores and/or senior grades through the first semester in making the decision on their application.

Q: What if I apply for early decision and am not accepted?

A: Most students who are not accepted early decision are deferred for reconsideration in the spring and notified of their final decision in late March. The Admissions Committee defers students in order to have the benefit of additional senior grades and/or test scores that may not be available at the time of early decision or to see how they compare competitively to the entire regular decision applicant pool.

In some cases, it is apparent to the Admissions Committee that an early decision candidate will clearly not be competitive for admission and that it is in the student’s best interest to know this sooner rather than later. In this situation, the Admissions Committee denies the applicant at the time of early decision notification, thus enabling the student to focus on alternative plans.
