Class of 81

Hello Anonymous Skidmore Alum!

Thanks for sharing your class year with all of us on Formspring. It’s always nice to hear from our alumni and 1981 was a great year. At least that’s what I hear, I wouldn’t know for sure since I wasn’t born yet, but I am a big fan of Thundercats and Pat Benatar and that both came from the 80s, so that’s awesome. Thanks for dropping us a line!

Skidmore Holiday Traditions

It’s that time of year again. When snow clings to tree branches and squirrels look a little thicker around the midsection, it can only mean one thing — the holidays are here! With the holidays come tradition, and Skidmore has our fair share of holiday traditions. The first week of December, members of the campus community participated in two long-standing area traditions, each of which offered a new take on a beloved practice.

On campus the SGA (Student Government Association) Traditions Committee hosted the 23rd lighting of the campus tree, in a ceremony that included music by Skidmore groups as well as something new: participation by Skidmore alumni. President Philip Glotzbach opened the event and the Rev. Rick Chrisman also offered remarks. Those attending were asked to contribute an ornament to the tree, which will be replanted in a new location at the end of the semester.

Rohini Alamgir ’12, chair of the Traditions Committee, and Anne Delauney, senior assistant director of Alumni Affairs & College Events, collaborated on including alumni this year. Delauney called it a great way for alumni and students to interact. Read more about the ceremony in The Skidmore News; and view the tree through December outside Murray-Aikins Dining Hall.

Downtown Saratoga Springs has earned a deserved reputation for its annual Victorian Streetwalk, which this year marked its 25th anniversary. Sponsored by the Downtown Business Association, the event formally launches the holiday shopping season. Thousands of people annually attend to shop, of course, but also to see holiday displays and hear dozens of music groups that perform live throughout the evening.

Skidmore singers are always a big draw the silver anniversary Victorian Streetwalk featured performances by the Bandersnatchers, Dynamics, Accents, and Drastic Measures, all of whom contributed to the festive event with their lively interpretations of holiday music.

Happy holidays from the Skidmore family!

UNDERGRAD ENROLLMENT?

Hi there, I think you are asking about the current state of our undergrad enrollment.

If that’s the case, then the answer is approximately 2,400 wonderful men and women from all over the U.S. and the world. Our student body is comprised of 59% females and 41% males, 21% students of color and 4% international students.

If you are asking if we accept undergrads for enrollment, then the answer is yes, we do! You can apply here: http://cms.skidmore.edu/admissions/apply/index.cfm.

Thanks for the question and have a great Friday!

If you are an international student do you receive anything via mail or do we just get an email? I would love a big envelope like my american counterparts…

Hello there. You are in luck, international students do receive notifications via postal mail as well as e-mail. Who doesn’t love a big envelope in the mail?

when should applicants from westchester county, NY expect to get their ED letters?

Hi there Westchester County resident. Early Decision letters went out today but I am afraid I have no idea how long it will take that letter to make its way down to Westchester County. I would tell you to look for the letter next week. But until then, sit tight. Sorry I can’t help more!

Hi! I am an international ED1 applicant.I heard that the admission result would be mailed on Dec 15.I wonder if international students can receive decisions via email because it takes a long time for the letter to arrive in my country. Thanks you so much.

Hi there and thanks for the question!

International students are notified by e-mail not U.S. post, so you don’t have to look for the letter. I have even more good news, I hear that the e-mail will go tomorrow most likely or Friday at the latest. So, good luck!

Ask us a question about Skidmore!

My brother will be starting on campus this January. I want to get him gift certificates to local hangouts. Any suggestions?

Oh wow, this is an excellent question. I’ll also ask our current students to answer because they may know of a few more hangouts than I might.

My first recommendation would be to grab a gift certificate from The Skidmore Shop, the campus bookstore, because what new freshman wouldn’t want some Skidmore swag? (Or more likely, some school supplies, which he can get at the bookstore too.) Here’s a link to order them from the store: http://bookstore.skidmore.edu/MerchList.aspx?ID=7406.

Next up, I would say Uncommon Grounds. This coffee shop in downtown Saratoga Springs is a favorite among Skidmore students. If your brother doesn’t like coffee, that’s ok, they have tea, smoothies, cookies, ice cream and cakes–something for everyone! Here’s the link to order some gift cards from Uncommon: http://www.uncommongrounds.com/store/gift-cards-c-43.html?osCsid=6da13715ebd1e2b1ac27a6d3aff9edc5.

I would also recommend Plum Dandy Frozen Yogurt, again a favorite among students. Every Tuesday night Skidmore students get a buy one, get one free deal AND they accept Skidmore ID cards. Here’s the link to that one: http://www.plumdandyyogurt.com/merch.html.

Hope that helps! Again our current students may have some opinions too, so look for answers as well.

Thanks,
