It’s fall; and for the sports fan in me that usually means one thing — football. I went to a large state school in the midwest where football was a way of life every Saturday from September to November. You can imagine the shock I went through when I came to Skidmore and realized — gasp — there is no football team.
Well, let’s rewind here. There is a rumor that Skidmore once had a football team and that they played only one game (against Hamilton College) and won, therefore sealing our fate as an undefeated football team forever. I have no idea if that rumor is true. I heard it from Bob Carlton at The Skidmore Shop and frankly, I think he was making it up. But, still, the rumor is out there.
What is not, in fact, a rumor is that Skidmore competes in the NCAA Division III bracket. We are a member of the Liberty League which includes the likes of Bard College, Clarkson University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. Lawrence University, Union College and Vassar College. Our mascot is the Thoroughbred, a horse often known for speed, agility and spirit, and fits right in with the town of Saratoga Springs, whose motto is “Health, History and Horses.”
So, we may not have a football team, but we have plenty of other sports to keep you occupied.

2011 Skidmore College Women's Riding Team
We’ll start with what is arguably our most popular sport on campus — Women’s Riding (as in horseback riding). Did you know that since 1990 Skidmore’s equestrian team is the nation’s most successful—the New York Yankees of college riding, if you will? Riding is a varsity sport at Skidmore—not necessarily the case at other schools. Here’s an inside look at the riding program at Skidmore.
Other women’s sports include Basketball, Crew, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Diving, Tennis and Volleyball. This year’s field hockey season has started off with a bang, with only one loss to Middlebury. The women’s Tennis, Lacrosse, and Soccer teams also have Facebook pages where you can keep up with their respective seasons.

2010 Men's Basketball Liberty League Champs
As far as men’s teams go, our Basketball team won the 2010 Liberty League. Being Liberty League champs secured the T’breds (short for Thoroughbreds) a spot in the NCAA tournament. Though we ultimately lost to Amherst in the first round, we finished the season with a record of 18-10. It’s almost basketball season now, and there’s no telling what’s in store this year!
Our men’s ice hockey team picked up their first win over University of New England this past weekend at the hockey home opener. Fun fact: the hockey home opener is also “Pack the Rink” night where the first 400 fans receive a free T-shirt. In addition to the free shirts, there are also tricycle races, raffles and free prizes throughout the night.
Other men’s sports include Baseball, Crew, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming and Diving, and Tennis. Check out the men’s Lacrosse team on Facebook as well as the Tennis team.
So there’s a run down of the sport scene at Skidmore. We also have club sports and intramural teams for those of you who want to play recreationally and not competitively. Questions? Check out the Athletics site, or ask us!
