You asked: do freshman get to choose/rank their housing option? or is it randomly assigned?

Good morning,

Freshman do not get to request or choose housing at Skidmore. All incoming students are assigned a room and roommate(s) based on legal sex, smoking/non-smoking preference, and their assigned First Year Experience Seminar, and when possible, other preferences designated on the Residential Life Housing Questionnaire (such as gender-neutral housing). We do this to create a supportive community of your peers when you first get to Skidmore. This way, you have a built-in network of friends in and out of the classroom.

Hope that helps!

You asked: Can all students use the gym to use the exercise equipment? Is there an additional charge for that?

Good morning,

Yes, all students can use the fitness equipment in the Sports Center free of charge. You’ll need your Skidmore ID card to get in, but once you’re in the Center, you can swim, use the treadmills and ellipticals, racquetball courts, and weight-lifting equipment.

Hope that helps!

You asked: Which Residence halls with the incoming (fall 2012) freshman be staying in?

Hi there,

All incoming freshman have a chance to live in any of the residence hallson campus except Scribner Village and Northwoods village apartments. So that means you could be in Howe-Rounds Hall, Jonsson Tower, Wait Hall, Kimball Hall, McClellan Hall, Penfield Hall, Wiecking Hall, or Wilmarth Hall.

Hope that helps!

You asked: I understand that freshman roommates are chosen at random based on a survey, but is the skidmore on facebook app used at all in the process? thank you

Hello, great question!

The main determinants for housing will be the housing questionnaire and your Scribner Seminar. The Skidmore on Facebook App is not used in the process, but you can connect with your new friends there and coordinate your Scribner Seminar choices. We try to match your first choices for Seminars and all Seminar mates are housed in the same hall (though not the same room).

Hope that helps!

You asked: Do you have a darkroom?

Hello, happy Sunday!

Yes, Skidmore does have a darkroom that is managed by the student photography club. Here’s a link to their site: http://www.skidmore.edu/studentorgs/photography/information.html.

As a member of the photography clube you have full access to the darkroom, 35mm film cameras, Digital SLR cameras, and free film.

For information pertaining to the location, hours of operation, appropriate use and reimbursement of the dark room, you can contact the current Dark Room Manager, Melissa Cohn ’13 at mcohn@skidmore.edu.

Ask us a question about Skidmore!

You asked: As a freshman, can you request to be in a double? Also, do the triples only have bunkbeds?

Hi there,

Unfortunately, you cannot request room assignments.

If you are assigned a triple, the beds in South Quad (Kimball, McClellan, Penfield, Weicking, Wilmarth) actually all start out “de-bunked” as three single beds. If you decide you want the beds bunked, you have to ask permission. The residence halls on North Quad (Howe-Rounds, Jonsson, Wait) are all bunked permanently, so make sure you call dibs on the top bunk!

Hope that helps!

You asked: Do transfer students get some choice of where to live, or are they just placed wherever they can fit?

Hi there,

It depends on the year. Transfer students are guaranteed housing and are typically housed with another transfer. Since it’s year to year, I would suggest contacting Res Life to see how this year looks. You can e-mail Res Life at reslife@skidmore.edu or call 518-580-5765.

Hope that helps!

You asked: How many people in a room for freshman?

Hi there,

Freshman are housed in rooms with either one other person (a double) or two other people (a triple). All incoming students are assigned a room and roommate(s) based on legal sex, smoking/non-smoking preference, and their assigned First Year Experience Seminar, and when possible, other preferences designated on the Residential Life Housing Questionnaire (such as gender-neutral housing).

Please know, Skidmore College does not assign rooms or roommates by request or on the basis of race, religion, or national origin. All of our residence halls are smoke free and substance free.

Incoming first year students will receive a housing questionnaire link via email in late May/early June. Housing assignments are sent to your Skidmore email account in late July/early August.

Hope that helps!
