Mystery Map XI has been revealed! The original unedited map is pictured above showing Wind Resources for the state of New York. The maps were developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and TrueWind in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America program. Maps like these are often involved in the preliminary stages of selecting locations for wind farms. From maps like these, wind companies can assess sites that have the potential for generating wind power, and then start actually visiting the site and setting up some meteorological towers to gauge the actual wind speed.

The first person to guess the map correctly (without cheating) was Tori. Just stop by the GIS Center on the second floor of the library whenever you get a chance to pick up your prize.

Below I’ve included the link to NREL’s site which I downloaded the data from and another map produced by hint.fm that shows a live map of wind resources in the U.S. Very cool stuff.
