Playing with Apps

A question came up in a meeting this week about updating Skidmore blogs with mobile devices. Specifically, if it was possible. I’m happy to report that, yes it is very possible. In fact I’m posting this with my iPad!

Here’s how I did it:

1. Go to Word press’s Mobile Apps page and find the app you need.

2. Install the app on your mobile device and follow the directions in the app.

3. Get blogging!

One problem I ran into was that XML-RPC was not enabled on my blog. Make sure yours is set up by following these directions in your blog’s dashboard:

1. Click Settings in the left navigation.

2. Select writing in the options that appear under settings.

3. Turn on the XML-RPC checkbox at the bottom of the page.

4. Click Save Changes.

Movable Type goes Open Source

Finally, Movable Type (the software that powers this blog) has moved to Open Source, with the release of its v4 beta.
MT4 is now offering over 50 new features and is hoping to bring back some of the bloggers back from WordPress.
They have a new site for the open source version at http://www.movabletype.org
To download the beta version of Movable Type 4, visit www.movabletype.org/download.html.

Academic Technologies Blog

So I sat down with Ben Harwood of Acad Tech and we worked thru a new MT template.
Cool-Calm-Collected, its called.
you can see it in action here:

We are looking at installing the Stylecatcher plugin for MT that will allow users to click different style templates and apply them to their blogs, without having to know anything about CSS, or MT Templates.
