You Asked…..Cars, graduation, athletes, summers, majors, and missing Skidmore.

Can you have a car on campus?

Yes you may. You are actually allowed to have a car all four years (also guaranteed housing all four years). And there is always space for parking.

Where is your graduation going to be ?

At the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. A beautiful performing arts center located in the southern tip of Saratoga (a ten minute drive from campus). During the summer SPAC hosts a wide variety of performances ranging from the Philadelphia Orchestra to Lil’ Wayne.

What support do athletes get?

Athletes, because of their busy schedule balancing classes and such, will become very familiar with Student Academic Services. Here the athletes are given an advisor who assists the student in organizing a class schedule and study schedule. If a tutor is needed someone in SAS will match the athlete with a tutor. SAS also is also equipped study rooms and snacks. All of these “services” are also available to the rest of the campus.

What are summers like on campus?

SSSSOOOOO MUCH FUN !! Students can stay on campus if they are taking a class, working, or working an internship/ research. I absolutely recommend staying a summer. All students staying for the summer live in Scribner Village on campus. I would guess about 400 students stick around. The rest of the campus is occupied by visitors staying for one of the many programs hosted here during the summer. It is a great opportunity to meet students because everyone is so eager to “chill” during their down time and everyones down time is around the same times of the day since most people are working or going to class during business hours. The campus is gorgeous. The town triples in size and there is just so much to do. SPAC opens with great ways to score cheap tickets.
I have been here every summer and have no regrets.

What are the least popular majors at Skidmore?

Hmmm, that is a tough question. I do not know for sure. But if I had to guess I would say computer science. It is such a small department.

what will you miss most about Skidmore?

Literally everything. I love everything and will miss everything. Skidmore has given me some of the best experiences, networks, and memories ever and I am so glad that I can take that much with me after graduation but in many ways I wish all of it were coming with me.
What is there not to love.

Big Green Scream

The Big Green Scream, an event held during the end of  the basketball season, is the biggest sports event of the school year. Students and locals often support Sidmore athletics teams but there never seems to be a sports event that can fill the stands like this one. The Big Green Scream is extremely fun. Sports events are always fun. Who doesn’t want to watch and support their friends as they put all their hard work on the court. The fun is oddly paired with sentimental moments as the seniors are honored for their dedication to the team in past years. The gym was decorated with the action shots of males and females who are soon to graduate; soon to leave their jersey and number behind on the Skidmore College campus. Each athlete was called up, center court, and greeted by their family as their photo was taken. For the last four years I have been attending basketball games, I have witnessed these athletes grow on the court. It was rewarding attending this event and seeing the athletes receive credit for being such great athletes- juggling school, work and sport. This like many other events during this time of the year is apart of a long process of the school year coming to a close. And for us seniors, college coming to an end.

The males basketball team, with family, center court.

A few words from the coach and the game against Union College begins. Our girls put up a good fight but unfortunately lost by a few points. Our males played a strong game all the way until the end. Up by 10 at one point, tied at another, and then back up again. The last time we played Union we lost on their court. I’m sure our males wanted to make up for that loss. Some highlights include a back to back block by freshman Connor Merrill and a beautiful dunk by senior Melvis Langyintuo; all contributing to what turned out to be a win. The Big Green Scream also offers chances to win sweet prizes including athletic wear, a flat screen television, and an I-pad. Winning prizes requires simple tasks such as asking questions pertaining to environmentally friendly facts and or completing a 3- point shot.

The Ujima Step team with some half time entertainment.

Up by 12 the game was over once we had possession with seconds left on the clock. The males playing exhanged hand shakes as signs of good sportsmanship and the Skidmore men made their way over to friends and family waiting in the audience.

I am hoping our males can bring all this energy to Wednesdays game.

A Post Thanksgiving Post

Thanksgiving, a day dedicated entirely to giving thanks to all things we appreciate in this world, of course not assuming we don’t give thanks every day of the year; For eating unbelievable amounts of food, observing semi awkward encounters between family members who have not spoken since, well last Thanksgiving; For the exciting feeling you get at the sound of tin foil wrapping the left overs you are sure to eat for the next three days, MmMmMm turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches; and lets not forget, for the countdown to the dangerous but oh so worth it Black Friday sales.

Okay, so maybe I am a little late on talking about the giving thanks, food, business but whether or not I hit the nail on describing your family’s thanksgiving I do hope it was a splendid holiday. I love left overs so if you’d like to overnight a dish, send it to me at my Skidmore address, please and thank you!

And in the spirit of giving thanks I will list the things about Skidmore I am thankful for not in any particular order.

1. I love who I have become in the last few years and I am thankful for the friends who have helped me get here

2. Professors who let me sit in their office for hours until I ‘get it’

3. Courses that hit me upside the head and open my eyes to things I have never taken notice of before

4. Great om nom noms at the Dining Hall. What would life be like without Chicken Finger Friday, hmmm maybe a few pounds lighter

5. The opportunity to take whatever class I want

6. The pretty landscape

7. Window seats in every dormitory of which my best friend insisted on sleeping in when she visited

8. Not having to share  a bathroom with an entire floor when I lived in the dorms

9. Northwoods (junior/ senior houses located on campus). I love my beautiful apartment

10. The Spa (fast food eatery located in the student center), being open always right when I need it, for my 1am munchies

11. Financial Aid. Need I say more?

12. Summer Housing. Who doesn’t want to stick around for the summer and lose a few bucks at the race track

13. Alumni Network. Someone’s going to hire me

14. Student Employment. There was always the option of not being broke

15. The sports center. I’m still trying to work off that freshman fifteen. Its been three years

16. For Australia

17. For covered walkways and buildings that are connected

18. For never being bored because there is so much to do

19. Being located in the beautiful Saratoga Springs

20. For not being a cookie cutter campus

I can go on for a long time but talking about left overs earlier has me wanting some right now. I’m thinking I should head towards the fridge now. But I will end by saying, most of all, I am thankful for Skidmore giving me an experience of which I will forever look back on and think, college was amazing…. can I do it again ?! ….. no but really, how do I do it all again?!!

You Asked: Do you like the sports center?

I love the Sports Center. Its clean, cool, and up to date. The sports center is open from 7-12am on weekdays and 9pm on weekends. The center has a cardio room, two weight rooms, a pool, a main gym, two rec gyms, dance studios, a multipurpose room, and a number of racquet ball rooms. Outdoors there are tennis courts, a soccer/field hockey/ lacrosse field, a baseball field, and a whole lot of green for just about anything. So basically there are heaps of ways to make use of the sports center and anyone, athlete or not, at any time can use any part of the center. Students can also borrow equipment from the center at any time.

You Asked: Does Skidmore have intramural sports?

Skidmore has both intramural sports and club sports. Both of which are heaps of fun. All the fun and excitment of being on a sports team without the long distance traveling and pressure of being an all star. Some of these sports include volleyball, raquetball, basketball, softball, tennis, and football. Joining an intramurals sports team is actually really popular on our campus. Students who join get really into the game, making uniforms and inviting friends to watch. I have played intramurals tennis and had a great time and I have only seen and heard great things from other intramural sports teams.
Joining an intramural sport is something I would totally recommend. Its fun and a great way to meet people.
