The AdLibs.

I totally forgot to post about the AdLibs show I went to sometime last week or so. Silly me !

The Ad Libs are an improve group on campus. The only improv group, If I am not mistaken. Last week they had their Spring show. Its all improve and fun humour. It has a somewhat “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” feel to it. Which I am more than okay with; great show, right ?

Heres a short clip of the show- uh it involves improv songs and nose jobs. HARHAR LULZ. Watch to see what I mean.

Larry Wilmore visits Skidmore

So wait, you didn’t get the invite? No mail, no facebook? About Larry Wilmore’s visit to Skidmore? EEk!! I am very sorry. Well below is what the facebook invite looked like. Now you can feel like you were invited and we can pretend like you were much too busy to attend and not that you are probably no less than 3 hours away from campus and definitely would not have attended even if you were aware such a funny individual was visiting the campus.

Speakers Bureau proudly presents an evening with Larry Wilmore.Larry started his career as an actor and stand-up comic before transitioning to television writing and producing in the early 90s. Hes written for shows such as In Living Color, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Jamie Foxx Show. He co-created the animated show The PJs with Eddie Murphy and a few years later created “The Bernie Mac Show” starring Bernie Mac. Most recently he was a consulting producer on NBCs “The Office.” “The Daily Show” has marked a return to performing for Larry and he is currently developing a sitcom for himself at HBO. He also wrote his first book entitled “I’d Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts” from Hyperion Books. Larry has been nominated and received numerous awards including an Emmy, a Peabody, Humanitas, TV Critics and NAACP Image Award.

Honestly, I am not too familiar with Wilmore’s material but I am glad I took some time out tonight to watch him do what he does best.

Now I must apologize for mentioning something so cool and having no hardcore material to show you. No pictures, no videos. There actually were none allowed. I can say this much, he was good, and I got enough LOLs in.

How Could I have Forgotten Last Weekend… ?!

I just realized I completely forgot to fill you in on my weekend; last weekend. Yea, that one where I did no homework. Well, last Friday I attended the Rithmos Spring Concert. The Rithmos are Skidmore’s Jazz/Hip- Hop Dance Ensemble. I think I said that right, go me ! The girls and one guy are fantastic dancers but I must say the Manmos were the highlight of the show. Manmos is the all male parody group of the Rithmos. These guys looked great in their get ups dancing to non other than Beyonce’s Girls Run the World.

After enjoying the dance performance I hurried my way to the Drastic Measures Benefit Concert. The Drastic Measure is a co- ed a-capella group on campus. Friday night they invited  most of the groups on camus to sing a few numbers. The purpose was to raise money for a local organization, Saratoga Bridges. The only thing better than watching a show on campus is watching a show on campus that is organized for a good cause. And, psht ! Of coure I donated! Any way, that was fantastic. I was obviously crazy about all the groups who performed Adele songs, that would be 3 total, and still not enough for me ! Yes, I love Adele. The Treblemakers, Skidmore’s only all inclusive a- capella really blew me away with their Britney Spears mash up. Now, that, I was jamming to. Ever dance and sing in your seat while watching a performance and then stop and think “wait, I must look ridiculous ! – I should stop”. I had one of those moments. The performance was that fun. Anyways, good job Drastics on a fantastic show.

Saturday night was all about comedy. Improv comedy to be exact. The Ad- Libs gave us a laugh- tastic show. Slapped my knee a couple times. I would explain some of the jokes to you … but then it wouldn’t be funny. I mean you can’t re- enact improv, right ?!

Sorry I don’t have any videos from the Benefit concert or the Comedy Show but catch a peep at the Rithmos show.

Just Another Saturday Night

Before I dove into masssive amounts of homework and post- graduate planning last night I attended two events on campus. I love discussing on-campus events because I know a concern for many prospective students is the availability of campus events that do not involve solo cups and music that’ll make your ears bleed.

Last night two students of the dance department choreographed a piece each for their independent study.  These pieces involved about 5 dancers each and were formed in The Tang‘s Pane Room*. Each piece was about 15 minutes long and blew my mind in the most interesting ways. When watching modern pieces, I must say, I sometimes think “what in the world is going on?”, “what is this supposed to mean?”.  It takes some times before I can remind myself to stop over thinking the piece and to just enjoy the work. All in all both of the pieces were quite beautiful. I made a mental note to make sure to attend more dance performnces. And I am sure there will be a few in the future. It’s fun to think that though I lack talent in the arts, there are heaps of ways in which I can enjoy the arts on this campus and reap the benifits of living on a campus that is so diverse in the interests and passions of the student body.

Below are some pictures and a short video of the piece choreographed by Emily Pacillio’12. Sorry my camera is not fancy.

After the dance performance I made my way over to Gannett*. Here Skidomedy, one of the campus comedy groups was performing. Skidomedy is a sketch comedy group. This performance lasted no more than an hour. From beginning to end I was laughing out loud. I loved it; I had so much fun. Talking about a comedy performance never does any justice to how funny the material actually is. I also am awful at retelling stoies so I know I will do no justice to their show. T’is why I recorded some of the show. The first video is of the group’s introduction skit. The second is what I would call “Kid Bruce Wayne”.

*The Tang Teaching Museum is a museum like any other that holds professional art work (about 6 major exhibits per year). It is cosidered a teaching museum becuase of the co- collabartive work that goes on inside the museum and because the museum also has multimedia class rooms. The Tang’s Pane room is often used for fancy dinners, performances, or small exhibits. The Tang roof is a performance space. Every Friday of the summer a different band plays on the roof of the Tang.

*Gannett is an Auditorium located in one of the academic buildings. It is used for some large courses which is rare because we have such few large course; only one percent of the courses at Skidmore College have 50 students or more. Gannett is also used for guest speakers, and performance groups on campus such as the comedy groups and a-capella groups.
