I gave a tour today. The weather sucked. It was cold and cloudy; gloomy. On these days tour guides expect that the people on the tour will just be in an off mood, I mean weather can easily influence affect. But my tour was great. You kind of just know when its going to be a great tour. They laugh at all jokes and even giggle at the really corny stuff. Some of the families on this tour familiar with the Chicago area even filled me on what they knew about the great city since I will be moving there in August.
One of the visiting families was a father and his daughter. They were just as thrilled to be visiting the campus if not more than the other families. The father’s sister graduated from Skidmore- Class of ’83 so he was somewhat acquainted with the campus and continued to emphasize how impressed he was with the changes and additions the campus has made in the last few decades. The father even gave me his sister’s contact information who owns a gallery in Chicago! Never thought I would build a network in Chicago before arriving.
This kind of approach is common on my tours. I often meet very approachable families who are easy to talk with and a pleasure to meet. Maybe Skidmore just attracts really great people.
