It is with great pride that Lary Opitz calls himself a “total theatre artist”. Since his first professional Off-Broadway credit in 1967 and his beginnings at the legendary La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, he has worked as actor, director, playwright, scenic designer, lighting designer, costume designer, sound designer, producer, artistic director, stage manager, technician, technical director, and consultant on countless theatre, opera and dance productions on hundreds of stages throughout the world, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional, stock, touring and academic productions. He has often explored projects for which he has served as writer, director, designer and, occasionally, actor. He is the only person who is an active member of all four stage artist unions.
From 2012 through 2019, Mr. Opitz was the Producing Artistic Director for the Saratoga Shakespeare Company, a professional summer theater company established in 2000. With Executive Director Barbara Opitz he expanded the summer offerings, increased the number of national professional artists, developed a performing relationship with Saratoga Performing Art Center (SPAC), sought to improve the levels of inclusion and diversity, and increased the budget and educational training program of the company.
