I’m sorry it has been so long since I’ve posted…..this past month has been CRAZY! Let me tell about all the things that have happened.
1. I took my last final.
2. I finished writing my thesis manuscript.
3. I accepted a job offer.
4. I presented my thesis work at Skidmore’s Academic Festival-super nerdy but always fun!
5. I signed for my first ever 1 bedroom apartment.
6. I had my last Benef-Action event….. 🙁 We watched Pay it Forward and ate Plum Dandy as a study break- it was a perfect last meeting.
7. I worked my last ever writing center shift.
8. I went to my last SGA banquet- here’s my friend David and I all dolled up!
Needless to say there have been a lot of “last ever” things lately and it makes me so sad! I’m excited to move on and graduate but I’m going to miss Skidmore and Saratoga very much. I’ll keep you posted on all of the great Senior Week things that will be going on!
This past weekend was the Skidmore Spring Show…my last one! It was the Dirty Projectors and they played a really wacky but interesting set. My boyfriend came up to visit for the weekend/go to the concert which was nice!
We went home to see my fam and my best friend from high school too….but not before I took him to dhall for the first time! Those cookies man.
So the countdown begins- two weeks until classes end and my thesis is due, then about a week until I’m all done with finals!! I have three job interviews in the next few weeks too so things are going to get a bit crazy. The bookstore is selling our caps and gowns now and that’s when it all really hit me….pretty soon I’ll be an alum! AH!!!!
Have a great rest of your weekend everyone!
Congrats to all of you who have been admitted to Skidmore-I’m glad you had such nice weather on accepted students’ day. It was great to meet some of you!
Now that it is April Social Justice Month is in full swing…we had our kick off event last weekend and it went really well! The Spa was packed, all the food was gone in minutes, and all the performers were amazing. We also finally debuted the event list…there’s pretty much something going on every day!!
Benef-Action had its first Social Justice volunteer project this past weekend too. We were working with a local non-profit that runs services for people that work at the racetrack in the summer. We sorted clothing donations, moved lots of furniture around, and organized their entire kitchen/food donation area. Now they’re all ready for their opening next week! Benef-Action has elections next week (I’m going to miss it so much!) one more volunteer project, and then we’re going to be showing the movie Pay it Forward for our last event 🙂
This last month is going to be crazyyyyyyy between my thesis, finals, job interviews…I made it to the second round of interviews for my dream job which is really exciting, and then I got two other interviews for positions in Pittsburgh for next week. It is all really exciting but makes me realize that I am graduating soooo soon!!!
We were all hoping that lovely spring weather would be returning to Skidmore by now, but unfortunately we’re officially in mud season. Can’t wait for everything to turn green again!
Lots of stuff has been going on at Skidmore-end of March/beginning of April is always super busy for clubs. Last weekend my friends and I went to the Hayat dinner, sponsored by a club that celebrates the cultures of Islamic countries. They had awesome Bollywood dancing and delicious Indian food, and everything was decorated so nicely! I had a lot of fun 🙂
That was also the day of Benef-Action’s last Saratoga Mentoring which we designed to be a safari/jungle theme…the kids loved it! One of the crafts we had them do was make safari bags, which they drew maps on. They got to put jungle animal and insect toys in their bags after they decorated them…so cute!
I’ve been doing so much thesis stuff these past few weeks that I think my brain is going to explode!! We made the graphs for my first set of data and I’m going to be running the actual stats this week…which is scary and exciting. It doesn’t really matter whether it worked or not in terms of it being completed, but I would really like it to!!! I had lunch with a prospective student the other day who is considering majoring in neuro, and it was fun to talk to her about my thesis in terms of just explaining it rather than worrying about whether or not it worked 🙂
Hope you all have lovely Easters/Passovers/last weeks of March or whatever you celebrate!! Also congrats to all of you who have officially been accepted into Skidmore!
Hope you’re having a lovely March so far. I am very sad to report that spring break is officially over today…how did that happen?? I just can’t believe I only have two more months at Skidmore-very sad indeed.
My spring break (at least the first half) was really nice. My boyfriend and I visited my best friend from highschool in Virginia, where it was actually above 50 degrees! Then he and I just relaxed the rest of the week and I had my really big job interview. I should be hearing back from them in about two weeks, so cross your fingers for me!! The reason the second half of my break wasn’t so good was because I had strep throat. Ugh. Talk about bad timing!!
This week is actually going to be pretty busy for me as I’ll be analyzing my data for my thesis with my advisor, meeting with the coordinator of a local non-profit organization that Benef-Action is working with in April, doing two papers, writing a draft of my thesis manuscript, and planning a Saratoga Mentoring party for this weekend. After spring break the semester is always crazy and even my last semester is no exception!!! I’m hoping the weather warms up soon at least-spring is by far my favorite season at Skidmore…it is just so pretty.
Hello everyone-Happy Friday!! I’m headed home for the weekend so I thought I’d check in with ya’ll first 🙂 How was your week??
I didn’t have too much homework this week which was nice, so I could just focus on other things…like the fact that I have TWO job interviews coming up for two really great positions!! It is such a relief to start hearing back from people…now just comes the nerve-wracking, “wait I have to talk to people about myself for an extended period of time??” part. One is a phone interview next week, and the other is over spring break which will give me plenty of time to travel.
In other news, Benef-Action did a sweet mediation workshop this week which was a cool collaboration with Fight Club ( a conflict resolution club on campus) and Social Justice Month Team is in the final stages of event planning which is exciting!! Also, this past Thursday was National Philanthropy Day at Skidmore-it was nice to hear about how many people donate to Skidmore and also why they donate. For the most part it is Skidmore alum or parents of alum, but they all have really interesting stories and perspectives of the school! I stopped by one of the events to sign a thank you card (especially since many of my scholarships come from donations) and got a giant cupcake-yummy!
So I’m currently making a playlist for my drive home….any suggestions?? That reminds me, Student Entertainment Committee should be picking who will be playing our Spring Show soon….hope it is someone good!!
Happy Friday! I’m having one of those mornings where you accidentally wake up early and are actually being productive, so I’m not going to mess with that!
So….Gloria Steinem came to speak at Skidmore last night. Awesome right?? She was introduced by Prof. Beck Krefting who did an amazingly intelligent and funny speech, including the mention that she calls Gloria “G-Town.” Ms. Steinem was a lovely speaker-she has such an interesting perspective on feminism (she pretty much spearheaded the women’s movement in the 70s) and its relation to other social justice movements. It was really great to hear about her ideas on how social justice movements should be linked, especially because I had a Social Justice Month meeting right after her speech!!
Seeing Gloria was really the best part of the week-other than that I had two exams and so much reading/thesis stuff to do. Two more weeks til spring break…counting down the days!!! I have a friend’s birthday party to go to tonight but other than that it is a get homework done kind of weekend…so fun! (not so much) Have a lovely weekend guys!
Hope you had a lovely weekend. I finally finished up my mediation training (check out my certificate!) and now I’m buckling down and catching up on homework.
We had our Benef-Action elections last weekend and no one ran for co-president…so last minute I put my name in. I’m glad I’m back in the position to finish up my senior year! We also had our first Social Justice Awareness Month meeting of the semester which was awesome because we had so many new people with new ideas for topics-everything from education to world hunger to femicide to women’s empowerment. It’s going to be a really awesome month I think. Check out the Facebook page if you want to learn more about it, but I’m sure I’ll be talking about it a lot in the next few months! I’m also really pumped for it because there’s a new club forming on campus called Active Minds (which is actually a national organization) that wants to promote mental health awareness on campus. Its a topic I’ve always been super interested in, especially in regards to my major, but I’ve never really had the opportunity to pursue it….so it’ll be great to see what they do!
The other night I did dinner at Panera and saw Identity Thief with one of my best friends here….it was sooo funny! The title of this post comes from the song 500 miles which is in the movie. I definitely don’t watch enough comedy things….except for the TV show Girls which I am obsessed with-its a great Sunday night study break. What’s your favorite show on TV right now?
If you’re on the East Coast and actually got as much snow as they said you would, I hope you’re all snuggled up right now. Nemo barely hit us which was fine with me!! My boyfriend came to visit this weekend and I was glad that the weather didn’t stop us from walking around Saratoga. We went to Ravenous which is an amazing crepe place that you must go to!!! We also went to a concert in Albany with two of my friends-our friend Maryleigh opened for Milo Greene and it was easily one of the best shows I’ve seen. The venue was an old abandoned bank which was actually really pretty!
This past week was crazy busy for me in terms of catching up with work-last weekend I was in the first of two Mediation Training sessions. It is technically a 1 credit class offered by Skidmore, and we meet for four 8 hour days and write a paper. The first day was mostly about active listening and reflection which is something I’ve done a lot of at Skidmore in my leadership training, but it was nice to get a refresher. The second day was mostly about learning how to pick up on the four “zones” of stories, which is basically a way of organizing information that you need to help mediate a conflict. It was an exhausting two days but I learned so much! I’m working on my paper for the class today and then next weekend I’ll complete my training. Once I’m done I’ll be able to volunteer as a mediator at a downtown non profit organization and/or help with Fight Club, which is the mediation/conflict resolution club on campus.
I’m gearing up this week for our next Benef-Action meeting (we’re having our spring elections) and also the first Social Justice Awareness Month meeting of the semester-hope they both go well! I’m also running lab meeting for my lab group-gotta figure out what articles I’d like people to read beforehand!
It is the second week of classes and I finally feel like I’m all settled in. Minus the crazy sub zero weather and ice storms we’ve been having, it has been a good week! Still digging my internship and I really love my classes….and though I spend too much time in the lab I’m being pretty productive. The trick is to eat lots of pasta.
The Writing Center hasn’t opened yet so I haven’t been working there yet…but we did have our first Benef-Action meeting last night!
Tons of new people came which is always nice, and we outlined what ideas we have for the semester as well as what open e-board positions we have. Hopefully people run for all of them! We also showed this really great video at the end that you should check out; it’ll make your day. What’s your space jam??
I don’t have class today (I’m still getting used to this whole only two real classes thing) just work and TAing Intro Neuro and my internship. It’s warmed up to the 50s today so maybe I’ll do some puddling jumping!! How do you spend your rainy days?
