Every fall, Skidmore Unplugged, the College’s annual electricity reduction competition between residential halls, commences. Spearheaded by the Sustainability Representatives (S-Reps), Skidmore Unplugged is intended to establish long-lasting behavior change in the campus community. The S-Reps work hard to organize educational campaigns and plan thought-provoking lectures and events to promote energy reduction and illuminate the issues surrounding energy production and consumption. The competition is just one piece of Skidmore’s commitment to prepare informed, responsible citizens, as students enter a complex and challenging world upon graduation.
This year’s competition will begin October 18th and last through November 8th, and will be brandishing unique prizes to further encourage participation in the competition and its events. S-Reps will be focusing even more on behavior change campaigns and establishing sustainable habits that can be practiced year-round. Skidmore will again compete against the New York 6 Liberal arts consortium, which includes Hamilton College, Union College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Colgate University, St. Lawrence University, and Skidmore College, along with the inter-residential hall competition to save the most energy.
Last fall, Penfield Hall was victorious with a 4% total energy reduction, and Skidmore placed 4th in the New York 6 competition. Penfield was awarded a water bottle refilling station, and will be forever commemorated on the Unplugged trophy that resides in Case Center. During the three-week competition, students attended events such as The Haunted North Woods, a spooky tour through the North Woods led by S-Reps and members from the Environmental Action Club, and Acapella and Comedy in the Dark, where two Skidmore groups, Ad-libs and the Drastic Measures, performed a show completely in the dark. Other events such as the Brown Bag dialogue co-hosted by OSDP, “Energy, Exploitation, and Solutions” focused on issues surrounding energy production and consumption, and the disproportional effects it has on marginalized communities.
Skidmore College has the potential to win the New York 6 competition this year, and reduce more than ever before. With your commitment, we can make that a reality. Let’s unplug!
